Docusate sodium - Oral

Patient Medicine Information
Why do I need this medicine?
Docusate sodium belongs to a group of medicines called emollient laxatives. It is used to prevent and treat constipation by allowing water to be absorbed in the stool, making it softer and easier to pass out.

This medicine may also be used together with other medicines to empty the bowel before a certain diagnostic procedure.
How do I take this medicine?
Take Docusate sodium exactly as directed by your doctor or according to the instructions on the label. Do not take more or less than instructed by your doctor.

Try to take it at the same time each day.

This medicine is available as a capsule or an oral solution.

If you are taking the capsule, swallow it whole with a glass of water.

If you are taking the oral solution, use the measuring spoon or cup provided to measure out your dose. To minimise the burning sensation in the mouth or throat that it may cause, drink plenty of water or flavoured beverages (e.g. milk, orange juice) after taking your dose. If you are giving Docusate sodium to children, the oral solution can be mixed with a glass of flavoured drink such as fruit juices or milk. Drink the mixture immediately or within 30 minutes of preparation.

The dose of this medicine will be decided by your doctor. Your doctor will advise you on the treatment timeframe depending on the severity of your condition and response to the medication.
What should I do if I have forgotten to take this medicine?
Take the missed dose as soon as you remember. If it is almost time for your next dose, skip the missed dose and return to your normal dosing schedule.

DO NOT double a dose under any circumstances.
When should I not use this medicine?
Alert your doctor if you have the following conditions:
  • intestinal obstruction (blocked bowel)
  • stomach pain that is not related to constipation
  • nausea
  • vomiting
as this medicine may not be suitable for you.

Do not take Docusate sodium with other medicines for constipation such as mineral oil.
What should I take note of while taking this medicine?
Let your doctor know if you are pregnant or breastfeeding.

Be sure to check with your doctor or pharmacist before giving Docusate sodium to a child.

Avoid long-term use of any laxatives.

What lifestyle changes can I make to prevent constipation?

You can adopt some of the following lifestyle changes to help prevent constipation:
  • Include high-fibre foods such as fruits, vegetables, beans, and whole-grain cereals and bread in your diet. Add fibre to your diet gradually to help reduce gas and bloating.
  • Drink plenty of liquids. Limit caffeine intake, which may worsen symptoms of constipation by causing dehydration.
  • Be active and exercise regularly.
  • Do not ignore the urge to have a bowel movement.
What side effects could I experience?
Docusate sodium may cause any of the following side effects: diarrhoea, nausea, stomach cramps, and skin rash or itching.

The oral solution may also cause a burning sensation in the mouth or throat. Drink plenty of water or flavoured beverages (e.g. orange juice, milk) after you take your dose to minimise this problem.

Inform your doctor if any of these side effects do not go away or are severe, or if you experience other side effects.
